On October 15, 2020 Blood Purification Forum of Chinese Society of Nephrology was opened in Haigeng Hall, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. Chairman of Chinese Society of Nephrology, Professor Chen Jianghua attended the conference and delivered a work report. Professor Chen pointed out in the work report that this year is an extraordinary year. The Chinese Society of Nephrology actively exerted the wisdom and energy of nephrologists at the first time of the outbreak and organized experts to prepare preventive guidelines such as the “Suggestions of the Chinese Society of Nephrology on the Prevention and Control of New Coronavirus Infection in Blood Purification Centers (Rooms)”, “Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of New Coronavirus Infection with Acute Kidney Injury”, and “Expert Consensus on the Application of Special Blood Purification Technology in Severe New Coronavirus Pneumonia”. He pointed out that this epidemic fully reflects that our country has established a very effective Chinese prevention and control model under the leadership of the Party and the government, and believed the epidemic will certainly be effectively controlled in our country.

As the leading institution in the field of global blood purification, Davita (Shandong) Kidney Disease Hospital, on behalf of Davita Group, participated in this event under the pressure of prevention and control of the epidemic for the purpose of “learning the latest progress in blood purification, broadening the horizon and better serving the kidney friends”, represented by a group of 4 persons led by Vice President Liu Zengbo. This annual meeting is a national high-level blood purification meeting that brings together various excellent experts worldwide and countrywide for lecture and exchange, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, nationally renowned professors and experts from Japan and Taiwan, making a strong academic atmosphere. Next, we will appreciate the cutting-edge progress in the field of global blood purification.

First, there is a great growth in the number of patients with uremic dialysis both worldwide and in China. Up to 2010, there are 2.62 million uremic kidney patients receiving dialysis treatment worldwide, and the number is increasing year by year, but there are also 2.28 million people died at young age due to lack of timely dialysis, which mainly in Asia and Africa. With the aging and improvement of medical insurance policies, the treatment rate of dialysis in China has gradually increased. By 2019, there were 630,000 hemodialysis patients and 100,000 peritoneal dialysis patients in China. By the end of 2020, it is expected that more than 700,000 people may receive hemodialysis. During this expert lecture in Taiwan, it was mentioned that the number of patients in dialysis centers worldwide in Davita continued to grow. Therefore, we blood purification practitioners are facing more opportunities and challenges, and should serve the kidney patients with full enthusiasm and superb technology.

Second, malnutrition is an important issue affecting the life of hemodialysis patients. Nutritional problems of dialysis patients are of great concern to the medical staff, because malnutrition is highly associated with hemodialysis complications, infections, and mortality. Studies have found that while the blood albumin level decreased from 35 g/L to 30 g/L, the risk of death increased fivefold. According to statistics, the number of people with malnutrition among hemodialysis patients in China reaches 60% of all, which seriously affects the life quality of dialysis kidney patients, and this was mainly led by poor compliance, insufficient health education, lacking of nutritional awareness and so on. Therefore, it is very important to improve the compliance of kidney patients and strengthen their reasonable intake of nutrition.

Third, hemodiafiltration (HDF). It is internationally recognized that the quality of hemodialysis in Japan is excellent, so Professor Masanori Abe of the University of Japan was invited to give lectures on the experience of improving the quality of hemodialysis. He mainly mentioned that hemodiafiltration (HDF) is of great importance: it has a significant effect on the removal of medium and large molecules.

In conclusion, through this conference, we have learned about the cutting-edge progress in the field of dialysis in the international and domestic arenas, and also clarified the influence of Davita in the international academic field, which increases our confidence to do our work well. We will apply these new ideas and technologies in our clinical work to continuously improve the quality of hemodialysis and provide better services for kidney patients.
