Introduction: Caring for the “Silent Organ,” Guarding the Source of Life

March 13, 2025, marks the 20th World Kidney Day. This year’s campaign spotlights the theme: “Are Your Kidneys OK? – Detect early, protect kidney health” The initiative calls upon the public to prioritize early screening and scientific management of kidney disease. As a healthcare institution centered on kidney health, DaVita (Shandong) Kidney Disease Hospital hosted a special “World Kidney Day Kidney Friends Gathering” at noon today. The event featured a keynote lecture by Professor Wang Zunsong, a renowned nephrology expert from Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital. Joining the dialogue on kidney care were Ms. Anne O'Reilly, Senior Director of Nursing Education & Development at DaVita International; Ms. Nathalia Oliveira, Biomedical Services Manager at DaVita International; Ms. Jiang Fei, Nursing Manager of DaVita China; Mr. Zhang Xiaoyi, CEO of DaVita (Shandong); and Dr. Li Jin, Medical Director. Together with patients and their families, they shared insights on daily kidney wellness and preventive care.

Expert Lecture

Professor Wang Zunsong centered his presentation on “The Path to Wellness for Kidney Friends—Psychology · Diet · Exercise.”Drawing on clinical cases, he systematically outlined three pillars of kidney health management:

Daily Living: Maintain regular routines and consistent dialysis schedules; quit smoking and limit alcohol intake; regularly monitor blood pressure and prevent infections; practice psychological self-regulation; adhere to follow-up appointments.

Scientific Diet:Emphasize low-sodium and high-quality protein intake; avoid high-purine foods (e.g., organ meats, seafood); control phosphorus and potassium levels to reduce renal burden.

Appropriate Exercise:Aim for about 30 minutes of daily physical activity—avoid excessive duration. Opt for moderate exercises such as walking, skipping rope, cycling, Qigong, or Tai Chi. Strenuous activities are prohibited. Exercise intensity should be mild, stopping once slight sweating or fatigue occurs. Cease exercise immediately if experiencing shortness of breath, dizziness, or general weakness.

Global Collaboration, Boundless Care

Ms. Anne O'Reilly addressed the gathering, stating: “Kidney health is a global priority. The lifestyle management strategies discussed today lie at the heart of daily conversations between DaVita’s global clinical teams and our patients. DaVita is committed to fulfilling our mission with mind, heart, and action!”

She further urged, “In observance of World Kidney Day, DaVita International has launched synchronized global education campaigns. If you have questions about daily care or treatment plans, please reach out to your doctor or nurse. DaVita is building healthy communities for patients worldwide!”
